Treatment

We promote the maximum use of the resources contained in our waste.

At Urbaser, we promote the circular economy, recovering resources from waste with advanced technology and an expert team. We manage the entire waste treatment value chain internationally, maximising recycling and efficiency through operational excellence.

Municipal waste treatment facilities

Urbaser’s star product in the treatment of domestic waste is the so-called integral waste treatment plant, which applies the best treatment and recovery technology available on the market to each fraction of waste, always applying the latest technically proven technological developments for the recovery of waste with the aim of maximising recovery.

The processes we apply to the treatment of municipal waste are:

Mechanical treatment

It consists of the design, operation and maintenance of a set of electro-mechanical equipment provided such that it enables the sorting of the various materials contained in the waste according to their shape, size, density, etc. and thus maximise the recovery of resources contained in the waste. The aim of this process is to obtain different materials that are homogeneous in their composition so that they can be reintroduced into the production chain after a subsequent industrial process.

Biological treatment

In this process we apply aerobic and/or anaerobic technologies in order to degrade and stabilise the biodegradable fraction contained in the waste. The aim of this process is to maximise the production of an organic amendment applicable to the soil (this may or may not be possible depending on the origin of the waste according to current legislation). We can also obtain biogas from this biodegradable fraction contained in the waste, which can be used to produce energy in the form of electricity, heat and/or biomethane, thus avoiding CO2e emissions into the atmosphere.

Energy recovery

In this process we apply technologies that transform the chemical energy contained in the rejects from the material recovery processes into electrical and/or thermal energy. This energy has at least 50% of Renewable origin, thus avoiding CO2e emissions to the atmosphere. This is the preferred process according to the waste treatment hierarchy to landfill disposal. It meets the highest legal standards in terms of emissions produced.

Disposal is via a controlled final repository

This is a controlled deposit where non-recoverable waste rejects will be disposed of. Waste will be covered on a daily basis and managed in accordance with current regulations. This is the last alternative according to the waste treatment hierarchy. Urbaser complements this type of final management with the capture of the biogas from this biodegradable fraction contained in the waste, which can be used to produce energy in the form of electricity, heat and/or biomethane, thus avoiding CO2e emissions into the atmosphere.
