Urbaser, the Spanish company turning the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix into a sustainable circuit

  • Bahrain kicks off the Formula 1 season as the first circuit. Last year, this race became the most sustainable in the circuit’s history, all thanks to Urbaser’s collaboration, the company in charge of cleaning and waste collection services for the Grand Prix.
  • The leading Spanish company in environmental solutions will showcase its sustainable commitment for the second consecutive year by increasing the number of selective collection points and the usage of electric vehicles.

Madrid, February 29th, 2024. This weekend marks the beginning of a new Formula 1 season with the Bahrain Grand Prix. RedBull, Aston Martin and Ferrari arrive at the first Grand Prix with all the fans paying attention to their drivers. But in Bahrain, another company will also be of special importance. Urbaser is the company responsible, for the second consecutive year, for the cleaning and waste collection at the Bahrain International Circuit during the first F1 Grand Prix of 2024.

Since the new cleaning contract was awarded in 2023, the Bahrain F1 race has established itself as the most sustainable in the history of this circuit. Looking ahead to 2024, the F1 organization has strengthened its commitment to sustainability by, for example, designing a more environmentally efficient calendar and reducing long-distance travel. In its pursuit of achieving net zero emissions by 2030, F1 has found in Urbaser an essential ally for this Grand Prix.

Throughout this weekend, the Spanish company, which operates in Bahrain and 14 other countries, will mobilize 150 workers and 30 vehicles. “10% of our fleet consists of 100% electric vehicles. Additionally, we will install 50 recycling points within the venue and separate all food waste to be treated at a special composting facility,” said Luis de la Campa, Country Director of Urbaser in Bahrain and responsible for the company’s business in the Middle East.

“For Urbaser, collaborating to make F1 a greener and more sustainable spectacle is essential. Last year, thanks to everyone’s efforts, we made the F1 race the most sustainable in the history of this circuit. This year, and the next, we aim for the trend to continue,” added de la Campa.

Urbaser is the company awarded the cleaning contract for the Bahrain F1 circuit until 2025. A circuit that set a record for attendees last year with 36,000 spectators. This weekend, a large turnout is also expected as it marks the 20th anniversary of Formula 1’s arrival in Bahrain in 2004.
