Dosimetry
Through our dosimetry service, at Urbaser we ensure the ongoing protection of over 25,000 monitored users through monthly radiation tracking. We hold the sector’s leading accreditations: Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN, standing for Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear), ENAC, EMAS, ISO 9001:2015, and ISO 14001:2015
We measure and monitor occupational radiation exposure using personal dosimeters. Each user is assigned two thermoluminescence dosimeters to monitor exposure levels during professional activity. Each dosimeter is housed in a plastic chassis bearing a label with the user’s name and installation, along with a colour-coded band (red or blue) to indicate the monitoring month, and is fitted with an anatomical clip for attachment to work clothing.
At initiation, the first dosimeter is issued with user instructions. After one month, the second dosimeter is sent, and the first is returned for analysis. This monthly cycle is continuous. A padded envelope is provided with each shipment to ensure damage-free transit.
Dosimetry reports, containing both surface and deep dose readings, are available for download via the customer portal on the dosimetry service website. It is advised that the reported readings be reviewed and, where necessary, consulted upon with a radiation protection specialist. These reports must be retained securely at the facility.
Dosimeters – Thermoluminescence Detectors
Thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) are specialised dosimeters used for radiation measurement. Their use is now widespread across all areas of external dosimetry, including medical and industrial applications.
How do Thermoluminescent Detectors work?
Thermoluminescent cards are heated via nitrogen injectors. The emitted light is captured by photomultiplier tubes, which offer high yield, low background noise, and thermoelectric cooling.
The light is then converted to electrical charge, accumulated, and digitised. This numerical value is directly proportional to the radiation dose received.
