Urbaser<\/span>, a pioneer in the installation of the first electric vehicle battery recycling plant in Spain<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

This first electric vehicle battery recycling plant arrives in Spain as a result of the collaboration between\u00a0Urbaser\u00a0and\u00a0Endesa.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first electric vehicle battery recycling plant will be installed in Cubillos del Sil (Le\u00f3n) and\u00a0<\/span>will start operating at the end of 2023<\/span><\/b>. With an investment of 13 million euros, the facility is part of\u00a0<\/span>Endesa\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/a>s\u00a0<\/span>Futur-ePlan<\/span><\/b><\/a>, through which the energy company will alleviate the end of the operation of the Cubillos thermal power plant, which is already in the process of being dismantled.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS ENERGY TRANSITION AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The electric vehicle battery recycling plant is, once again, a clear\u00a0<\/span><\/span>commitment\u00a0<\/span>on the part of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Urbaser<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>wards<\/span>\u00a0sustainable development and environmental protection through\u00a0<\/span><\/span>circular economy<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 The new joint venture (<\/span>Urbaser<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Endesa<\/span>) will manage the collection of electric batteries in Spain and Portugal, their safe temporary storage and their transport to Cubillos del Sil for subsequent treatment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cThe electric vehicle battery recycling plant is a clear commitment\u00a0<\/span>on the part of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Urbaser<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>wards<\/span>\u00a0sustainable development and environmental protection\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The circular component of this alliance lies in the activity itself:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reuse and recovery<\/span><\/span>. In the new facilities of Cubillos del Sil, those batteries that can be reused will be adapted for\u00a0<\/span>this purpose<\/span>. The remaining batteries will be electrically discharged, disassembled and subjected to a separation and crushing process that will allow the recycling of the materials present, such as plastics, aluminium and copper, as well as the \u201cblack-mass\u201d, which constitutes the fraction rich in strategic metals, of great value in Europe, such as cobalt and nickel, both essential for the manufacture of new batteries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY RECYCLING PLANT TO BE READY IN 2023<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The project schedule has been defined with the aim of starting construction work as soon as possible, so that the plant can\u00a0<\/span>start operating by the end of 2023.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0However, it is planned to start the logistics activity in advance, so that the collection, transport and storage of the batteries, in safe conditions, will be brought forward to ensure the necessary volume that, in due course, will allow the plant to start up at full capacity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The development of these activities\u00a0<\/span>will generate\u00a0around\u00a050 direct jobs, plus as many indirect jobs yet to be quantified.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>This plant will meet the demand for recycling in both Spain and Portugal, with an estimated annual treatment capacity of\u00a0<\/span>8,000 tons of electric batteries.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a\u00a0<\/span>budget of\u00a0around\u00a013 million\u00a0euros,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>this project is part of the circular economy actions that\u00a0Endesa\u00a0has incorporated into its strategy, and whose promotion is being sought by both the\u00a0<\/span>Spanish government and the European Union through\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the Recovery Funds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the very nature of the new plant guarantees its viability, the capacities and strengths of its promoters,\u00a0Urbaser\u00a0and\u00a0Endesa, certify a leading recycling facility on the Iberian Peninsula.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a project that encourages us to be optimistic about a more sustainable future.
