The city of Barcelona entrusts Urbaser for the third time with the cleaning and collection of waste in its streets

Barcelona is a city known for its architecture, its millimetric urban planning and its international vocation. A city that must maintain its status as a modern smart city thanks to the good image created by its streets. That’s why, as far as waste collection and cleaning is concerned, Barcelona City Council has once again relied on Urbaser.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND CLEAN – UP OF EASTSIDE BARCELONA, IN THE HANDS OF EXPERTS 

Urbaser, leading environmental management company, has been awarded for the third consecutive time the contract for cleaning and waste collection services in the eastern area of the city of Barcelona. The contract will run for 8 years, extendable for a further 2 years, and will come into force in 2022.

The contract, valued at 475 million euros, covers the district of Sant Andreu, the district of Sant Martí and all the beaches of the city, which means a total of 17.6 km2 and the provision of services to more than 388,000 Barcelona residents. It will also employ 1,036 workers and will have a fleet of 417 vehicles, 327 of which will be zero-emission.

Urbaser’s general objective in this new contract is to provide the best service, always adapting to the needs of the city of Barcelona, guaranteeing the service at all times and transparency of information.

Six lines of action are being worked on in order to achieve the objectives of the contract, with a team of people committed to managing the service, ensuring operational control and achieving maximum citizen satisfaction.

The company is committed to an energy transition based on its own developments in machinery and work systems to reduce the environmental footprint of the service. Technological innovation and constant search for design solutions to increase selective collection and promote the circular economy are part of our strategy.

80% of the fleet provided by Urbaser is electric, with a complex battery recharging infrastructure, integrating vehicles of different sizes, different energy needs and multiple charger systems, thus minimising atmospheric emissions and noise during the service.

Urbaser has proposed a flexible service adapted to real needs based on a flexible and robust organisation.

In this contract, Urbaser has designed 8 seasons in the East Zone tailored to the citizen’s use of public space and the urban morphology of each neighbourhood. Barcelona needs a cleaning system that responds to two key aspects: permanent adaptation to the needs of the changing reality of the city on a regular basis and the flexibility to resolve any contingency quickly and efficiently.

+ COMMUNICATION AMONG ALL PARTIES CONCERNED

Urbaser promotes a culture of transparency, favouring open communication between the citizen, the City Council, supervision on the part of the City Council and the service.

For the new contract, citizen participation strategies have been promoted through the implementation of new communication channels, awareness-raising campaigns and environmental education.

+ INNOVATION FOR A BETTER SERVICE IN BARCELONA

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are a cross-cutting element in all aspects of this contract that favour knowledge of the services, by integrating citizens, City Council technicians and workers.

Urbaser has designed specific machinery to adapt the services to the needs of the city, such as narrow chassis for collectors, specific vehicles for the collection of bulky waste, mobile manual sweeping units, ergonomic cabins, advanced road safety systems and electric vehicle recharging systems integrating a multiplicity of parameters.

+ SOCIAL: #URBASERINCLUSIve

With the aim of continuously improving the working conditions, skills, abilities and degree of responsibility and motivation of the staff, Urbaser has presented a service offer that promotes social inclusion, applying social criteria in the management of the workforce that makes up the contract. Almost 20% of the total jobs in this contract will be for people with special difficulties and/or at risk of social exclusion, promoting the full integration of these groups within the workforce.
