On 5 June, we celebrate World Environment Day and look back on the actions we have taken so far to care of our environment.

In 1974, the United Nations named 5 June World Environment Day. The day was established to help publicise the cause, provide training, and raise company and individual awareness on the importance of caring for our environment.

This year, World Environment Day is concentrating on air pollution, a particularly pressing subject of which we should all be aware.

As a global benchmark for innovation applied to the environmental and waste management sectors, we at URBASER are working with particular determination to take maximum advantage of the various sources of renewable energy that waste offers, further reducing our energy consumption and our carbon footprint along with it. In this sense, the concrete data that backs our work is of particular note.

We have been able to reduce our energy intensity by 7% compared to 2016 figures. When combined with renewable energy production, fuel and material recovery, and the use of compost, this has made it possible for us to avoid releasing 1,481,280 tonnes of CO2 in 2018 alone, which represents a 7.3% increase over 2017.

In addition, we have quantified our environmental impact since 2013 by calculating the carbon footprint of all of our centres. This has been possible thanks to our own URGE CO2 tool, which identifies greenhouse gas emissions. These measurements help us improve and optimise our various processes to continue reducing our carbon footprint.

Researching and implementing energy recovery processes from waste, managing urban waste through low and zero emissions vehicles, and implementing energy efficiency measures are all part of URBASER’s commitment to the environment and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly: Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption), and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

Once again this World Environment Day, we at URBASER are happy to reaffirm our commitment, working each day to continue caring for our surroundings and reaching our ultimate goal of zero waste in the near future.
